The rice bowl of Tamil Nadu and home to the magnificent Brihadeeswara Temple — a UNESCO World Heritage Site completed in 1010 AD by Rajaraja Chola. Its 66-meter vimana (tower) was the tallest in India for centuries. Famous for the exquisite Tanjore paintings (gold-leaf artwork), classical music and dance traditions, the grand Maratha Palace complex housing the Saraswathi Mahal Library with rare ancient manuscripts, and the beautiful Schwartz Church.
