Goa is synonymous with beaches, parties, and seafood, but this tiny coastal state has so much more to offer the discerning traveller. Beyond the famous stretches of sand at Baga and Calangute lies a Goa of colonial charm, lush spice plantations, cascading waterfalls, ancient caves, and some of the most stunning natural scenery in India. If you think you know Goa, think again. Here are the hidden gems that will make you fall in love with this state all over again.
Dudhsagar Falls — The Ocean of Milk
Tucked away in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary on the Goa-Karnataka border, Dudhsagar Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in India, plunging from a height of 310 metres. The name means "Sea of Milk," and when you see the milky-white water cascading down the dark cliff face, you will understand why. The falls are most spectacular during and just after the monsoon (July to September). The trek through the forest to reach the falls, crossing streams and railway bridges, is an adventure in itself. RRM Holidays can arrange guided trips to Dudhsagar as part of your Goa itinerary.
Old Goa — The Portuguese Legacy
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Old Goa (Velha Goa) is a living museum of Portuguese colonial architecture. The Basilica of Bom Jesus, which houses the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier, is one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Asia. The Se Cathedral, with its massive bell known as the "Golden Bell," the Church of St. Cajetan modelled on St. Peter's in Rome, and the convents and chapels scattered throughout the area tell the story of 450 years of Portuguese rule. The area is hauntingly beautiful, especially at golden hour.
Fontainhas — The Latin Quarter
Fontainhas, in the heart of Panaji, is a charming neighbourhood of narrow winding streets lined with colourful Portuguese-style houses, art galleries, boutiques, and cafes. Walking through Fontainhas feels like stepping into a Mediterranean village. The brightly painted buildings in shades of yellow, blue, and green, the wrought-iron balconies, and the bougainvillea-draped walls make it one of the most photogenic areas in India. Do not miss the Gitanjali Art Gallery and the 31st January Bakery, a local institution.
Spice Plantations of Ponda
The area around Ponda in central Goa is home to several organic spice plantations that offer guided tours. Walking through these lush plantations, you will see vanilla, black pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cashew growing in their natural habitat. Many plantations also offer traditional Goan lunches and elephant rides. The Savoi Spice Plantation and the Tropical Spice Plantation are among the most popular. This is a wonderful experience for families and nature lovers.
Divar and Chorao Islands
For a taste of rural Goa, take a ferry to Divar or Chorao Island. These islands, located in the Mandovi River, are a world away from the bustling beaches. Divar Island features ancient Portuguese churches, rice paddies, and traditional Goan houses connected by quiet, tree-lined roads. Chorao Island is home to the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, a mangrove ecosystem teeming with birdlife including kingfishers, herons, and the rare mangrove kingfisher. The ferry ride itself is a delightful experience.
Secret Beaches
While Baga and Calangute get all the attention, Goa's true beach gems are found further south. Butterfly Beach, accessible only by boat or a challenging trek through the forest, is a pristine crescent of golden sand frequented by dolphins. Kakolem Beach, also known as Tiger Beach, is a hidden paradise at the bottom of a cliff with barely any visitors. Galgibaga Beach, one of the cleanest in India, is also a nesting site for Olive Ridley sea turtles. Cola Beach, with its freshwater lagoon just steps from the sea, offers a unique swimming experience.
Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary
Deep in south Goa, the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary is a pristine forest reserve that is largely untouched by tourism. The Bubbling Lake here is a unique geological formation where gas bubbles rise from the bottom of a crystal-clear pond. The Savari Waterfall and the trek to the Netravali peak are highlights for adventure enthusiasts. The sanctuary is home to leopards, giant squirrels, and a rich diversity of birdlife.
