Andhra Pradesh is South India's most underrated travel destination. While millions of pilgrims visit Tirupati each year, the rest of this vast and diverse state remains largely unexplored by mainstream tourism. From the stunning Araku Valley in the Eastern Ghats to the dramatic Gandikota Gorge, from the golden beaches of Visakhapatnam to the ancient Buddhist sites of Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be discovered. Here is why this state deserves a top spot on your travel bucket list.
Araku Valley — The Hill Station Nobody Knows
Nestled in the Eastern Ghats at an altitude of 1,100 metres, Araku Valley is one of the most beautiful hill stations in South India, yet it remains blissfully uncrowded. The journey to Araku from Visakhapatnam on the Kothavalasa-Kirandul railway line is considered one of the most scenic train rides in India, passing through 58 tunnels and 84 bridges across a distance of just 120 kilometres. In Araku, explore the Borra Caves — million-year-old limestone formations that are among the largest in India. Visit the tribal villages of the Dongria Kondh and Kondh tribes, learn about their unique culture, and trek through the lush coffee plantations that produce some of the finest organic coffee in India.
Gandikota — The Grand Canyon of India
If you have ever dreamed of visiting the Grand Canyon, Gandikota is the closest you will get in India — and arguably more accessible. The Pennar River has carved a spectacular gorge through the Erramala Hills, creating dramatic cliffs that rise over 300 feet above the river. The 13th-century Gandikota Fort, perched on the edge of the gorge, offers breathtaking panoramic views. Sunset at Gandikota, with the gorge turning golden in the fading light, is a sight that will stay with you forever. Camping under the stars beside the gorge is an increasingly popular activity.
Visakhapatnam — The City of Destiny
Visakhapatnam (Vizag) is Andhra Pradesh's largest city and one of the most beautiful coastal cities in India. The long, golden RK Beach is the city's crown jewel, while Ramakrishna Beach offers stunning views of the Kailasagiri Hill. The Submarine Museum, housed in a real decommissioned submarine, is a unique attraction. The Araku Valley trip often starts from here, and the city also serves as the gateway to the beautiful beaches of Bhimili, Yarada, and Sagar Nagar. Vizag's seafood is among the best in India, with fresh catches from the Bay of Bengal served at dozens of beachside restaurants.
Tirupati and Tirumala — The Sacred Seven Hills
The Sri Venkateswara Temple at Tirumala is the most visited religious site in the world, drawing over 50 million pilgrims annually. Perched atop the seven hills of Tirumala at 853 metres, the temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu. The darshan (viewing of the deity) is a deeply spiritual experience, and the temple's gopuram is an architectural masterpiece. Beyond the temple, the Tirumala Hills offer beautiful nature trails, the Talakona Waterfalls (the highest in Andhra Pradesh), and the ancient Silathoranam, a natural rock arch formation.
Lepakshi — The Vijayanagara Legacy
Lepakshi, located in the Anantapur district, is home to one of the finest examples of Vijayanagara architecture. The Veerabhadra Temple here is renowned for its hanging pillar — a pillar that does not touch the ground and has a gap through which a sheet of paper can be passed. The temple's massive Nandi bull, carved from a single stone and 4.5 metres tall, is one of the largest monolithic Nandis in India. The frescoes on the temple ceilings, depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, are remarkably well-preserved.
Kolleru Lake — Birdwatcher's Paradise
Kolleru Lake, located between the Krishna and Godavari deltas, is one of the largest freshwater lakes in India and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. During the winter months, the lake transforms into a paradise for birdwatchers, hosting over 200 species of migratory birds including pelicans, flamingos, painted storks, and spoonbills. A boat ride through the lake at dawn, with thousands of birds taking flight around you, is an unforgettable experience.
